About the Western Hockey League (WHL)

The Western Hockey League has 20 teams, divided into four 5-team divisions (U.S., B.C., East and Central). Begining in the 2003/04 season, the U.S. Division welcomed five teams; the Seattle Thunderbirds, Tri-City Americas, Spokane Chiefs, Portland Winter Hawks, and the newest franchise, the Everett Silvertips.

Thunderbird players must attend high school until they graduate grade 12. Players that have graduated are encouraged to attend a community college or the University of Washington. All education expenses are paid by the team. For more information on the educational opportunities afforded to the players, click here. Players attend Lake Washington High School, and once graduated, college-aged players attend Lake Washington Technical College.

Practice is 3 p.m. daily, so as not to interfere with school.

Seattle is located on the west coast of the United States, two and a half hours south of Vancouver, B.C. Although snow is rare, there is skiing and other snow recreation an hour away.

All Thunderbirds games are broadcast on local radio 1150AM KKNW. The Thunderbirds are covered by four major television stations, over 50 radio stations, five daily newspapers and several weekly newspapers.

Thunderbird players are billeted with host families interviewed and approved by the hockey club.
