Wedman’s Two Goals Leads T-Birds Past Chiefs

Volcan has three assists in 3-2 win over Spokane

KENNEWICK, September 6, 2018 — Matthew Wedman had two goals Thursday afternoon to lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 3-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament at the Toyota Center.

Nolan Volcan had three assists in the game as the T-Birds are now 2-2-0-0 in the preseason.

Preseason play continues for the T-Birds at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament on Friday with a matchup against the Kootenay Ice at 3pm.

Spokane went in front 1-0 at 9:41 of the first period on a shorthanded goal by Carter Chorney.

Seattle outshot Spokane 12-6 in the first period.

Seattle tied the game 1-1 when Andrej Kukuca scored a five-on-three power-play goal at 1:52 off assists from Nolan Volcan and Noah Philp. Kukuca has a four-game preseason scoring streak with two goals and four assists.

Wedman put the T-Birds in front 2-1 with 18 second left in the second period with a power-play goal. Jake Lee and Volcan had the assists.

Adam Beckman scored a power-play goal at 9:34 of the second for the Chiefs to tie the game 2-2. Chorney had the only assist.

The Chiefs outshot the T-Birds 16-10 in the second period and both teams had 22 shot after two periods.

Wedman scored with 3:23 left in the third period to get the game-winning goal. Volcan had the only assist on the goal.

Spokane outshot Seattle 36-26 in the game.

Seattle goalie Liam Hughes had 34 saves on 36 shots and is now 2-0-0-0 in the preseason.

Spokane goalie Campbell Arnold had 21 saves on 24 shots and his preseason record is 1-1-0-0.

The T-Birds wrap up preseason play with back-to-back games against the Everett Silvertips. They will play on Tuesday, September 11, at 7:05pm at the accesso ShoWare Center. The T-Birds will travel to the Angel of the Winds Arena on Saturday, September 15, to play the Silvertips at 7pm in their final preseason game. Tickets for the preseason game on September 11 are now on sale.

The T-Birds start the 2018-19 Western Hockey League regular season against the Portland Winterhawks on Saturday, September 22 at 6:05pm at the accesso ShoWare Center.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2018-19 regular season are on sale online on the T-Birds website and at the accesso ShoWare Center box office.
