Wedman scores shootout winning goal in 7-6 shootout win at Red Lion Hotels Tournament

KENNEWICK, September 8, 2017 — Matthew Wedman had a hat trick and scored the shootout winning goal Friday afternoon to give the Seattle Thunderbirds a 7-6 win over the Spokane Chiefs at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

Preseason play continues for the T-Birds at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament Saturday with a matchup against the Kootenay Ice at 11am.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Andrusiak at 3:34 of the first period. Dillon Hamaliuk and Reece Harsch had the assists.

The Chiefs went in front 2-1 on two goals from Ross. Ross scored at 12:47 and then shorthanded at 16:41.

Wedman tied the game 2-2 with a power-play goal at 17:40 of the first off assists from Jake Lee and Aaron Hyman.

Spokane outshot Seattle 14-6 in the first period.

Cedric Chenier scored unassisted at 11:22 of the second period to put the Chiefs in front 3-2.

Just over three minutes later Blake Bargar tied the game 3-3 off an assist from Donovan Neuls. Samuel Huo had the second assist.

The T-Birds took a 4-3 lead with 17 seconds left in the second period on a goal from Wedman, his second of the game. Berlin had the only assist on the goal.

The Chiefs outshot Seattle 12-11 in the second period and led 26-17 in shots after two periods.

The game was tied for a fourth time when Ross scored his third goal of the game 39 seconds into the third period.

The T-Birds took a 5-4 lead at 2:27 on a goal from Graeme Bryks off an assist from Luke Orsmby.

Wedman netted the hat trick at 5:14 of the third off assists from Andrusiak and Lee to give the T-Birds a 6-4 lead.

The Chiefs tied the game 6-6 with goals from Rykr Cole at 7:42 and Milos Farfak at 18:08 of the third period.

Both teams had eight shots on goal in the third period and the Chiefs had a 34-27 advantage in shots going into overtime.

Berlin had 32 saves on 38 shots while Spokane goalie Donovan Buskey had 24 saves on 30 shots.

The T-Birds wrap up preseason play with back-to-back games against the Everett Silvertips. They will play on Friday, September 15, at 7:30pm at Xfinity Arena in Everett. The T-Birds will return home to the ShoWare Center on Saturday, September 16, at 7pm for their final preseason game.

The WHL Champion T-Birds start the 2017-18 Western Hockey League regular season against the Tri-City Americans on Saturday, September 23 at 7:05pm at the ShoWare Center.
