KENT, February 11, 2011 — The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 8-2 Saturday night at the ShoWare Center.
Burke Gallimore and Travis Toomey scored goals for Seattle in front of the 4,771 in attendance.
Brad Ross opened the scoring in the game for the Winterhawks with a power-play goal at 12:34 of the first period. Ross was assisted by Ty Rattie and Taylor Aronson.
Seattle (19-28-4-5) outshot Portland 17-5, but Portland led after the first period 1-0.
Ryan Johansen netted a pair of goals early in the second period to extend Portland’s lead to 3-0. The goal at 1:43 of the second period was assisted by Ross and William Wrenn. The power-play goal at 3:39 of the second period was assisted by Troy Rutkowski and Joe Morrow.
The T-Birds scored their first goal at 4:58 of the second period to pull the T-Birds within two goals. Toomey put the puck in the back of an open net after Brendan Rouse drove the crease hard, forcing Winterhawks goaltender Keith Hamilton to commit before backhanding a pass to Toomey. Erik Bonsor also assisted on the play that made it 3-1.
Portland (38-16-0-3) made it 4-1 at 15:20 of the second period when Riley Boychuck scored, assisted by Brendan Leipsic.
Ryan Johansen scored at 15:59 of the second period on the power play. Joe Morrow assisted on Johansen’s third goal of the night for a hat trick.
The Winterhawks outshot Seattle 20-7 during the second period.
Aronson’s power-play goal at 1:25 of the third period made it 6-1 Portland. Aronson was assisted by Sven Bartschi and Nino Niederreiter.
Portland made it 7-1 on another power-play goal, scored by Morrow, assisted by Rutkowski and Craig Cunningham at 4:27 of the third.
Gallimore netted his 26th of the year at 6:11 of the third period to make it 7-2. Gallimore was assisted by Ryan Button and Luke Lockhart on the power-play goal.
Portland lead 8-2 after Seth Swenson beat Michael Salmon at 17:29 of the third period. Swenson’s power-play goal was assisted by Derrick Pouliot and Josh Hanson.
The T-Birds outshot the Winterhawks 13-12 during the final period and the teams equaled shots at 37 for the game.
Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard (19-26-3-5) made 28 saves on 35 shots before Michael Salmon took over with 7:11 left in the third period. Salmon made a save on a pair of shots.
Hamilton (9-3-0-2) made 35 saves on 37 shots to earn the victory.
The T-Birds host the Spokane Chiefs Sunday, February 13th at the ShoWare Center. Game time is 5:05 p.m. They travel to Vancouver to face the Giants Friday, February 18. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Pacific Coliseum and the game can be seen regionally on FSN.
